Novak Djokovic came into this event as the heavy favorite being the 5-year reigning champion and last remnant of the “Big 3”. Djokovic has dominated for years and holds the most grand slams of all time, so it was no surprise when he easily made his way to the final, taking out top new generation players like Jannik Sinner. Carlos Alcaraz, the current world no. 1 also made an expected deep run, although he faced some difficulty on his way to the final. Final day got off to a very quick start with Djokovic showcasing his vast experience and talent, quickly taking the first set from Alcaraz. But in typical fashion, Alcaraz proceeded to pull an amazing push from nowhere to take a 2-1 set advantage over Djokovic. With the final on the line, Djokovic managed to take the 4th set to force a final set. In this situation at Wimbledon, Djokovic had a 10-1 record, so it seemed to be all but engraved onto the trophy. But Alcaraz, always the disrupter, managed to pull off a historic upset in the final seconds.

With Alcaraz’s unexpected win, many suggested that Djokovic’s era of dominance was over. And while it may be true that Djokovic will not have free rule over the tour, he is still the best player in the world. With a constant fight for the no. 1 spot, and battles at the highest stages, the tennis world is highly anticipating a rematch in the final of the U.S. Open. All we can do now is wait.
