Here’s a quick synopsis of this season for all of you that aren’t teen romance fans!
Belly: It’s always been you, Conrad.
Jeremiah enters and his eyes sparkle, giving Belly comfort.
Jeremiah: He’s going to hurt you, Belly.
Belly: Yeah, I know. That’s why it’s always been you, Jere.
Jeremiah: He still loves you. You need to talk to him.
Belly: I will, but it won’t matter because it’s you I want.
Scene switches.
Conrad: Belly, I didn’t mean what I said earlier. I still do [love you]. Just don’t say anything.
Scene switches.
Belly: I choose you, Jeremiah.
(This is a visual representation of me watching this season).
BELLY has lost her mind. There is no other explanation. Now, you may be thinking: Jasmine is a Team Conrad girly, so naturally the ending of the season makes her upset. NO. I no longer identify as a Team Conrad girly. I am anti-Belly and pro-Conrad. Belly is messing with two grieving brothers that haven’t even processed their mother’s death yet. On top of all of that, they are in love with her. I mean, I get it. She’s a 17 year old girl with mixed emotions. But honestly, I did not like it.
There is a long list of things that I absolutely hated about this season. However, that list would cover 5 pages, so here are 4 things I disliked:
Belly cannot pick a side. Girl, come on. Give yourself time to reason with the loss of Susannah and let go of romance for a bit. You are only hurting yourself and the people around you. She really needs to stop being delusional as well. Belly needs to convince herself that there is nothing left between her and Conrad. May I remind you of the beach scene during the party? “I would have fought for us.” Sure.
Jeremiah has and will only ever see Belly as a prize. His romantic interest only started when Conrad started showing Belly romantic signs. They are really good at being best friends, but putting Jeremiah and Belly in a relationship will get messy, quickly.
Jeremiah and Conrad need to sit down and talk. Screaming at each other will not work. Jeremiah needs to understand that Conrad was at college and dealing with his grief differently. He couldn’t come home everyday and help out. On the flip side, Conrad needs to understand that Jeremiah felt abandoned and stressed about their mother’s cancer. They need to stop telling each other to grow up and start going to siblings therapy.
Jenny Han, I have beef to pick with you. You have made Belly such an unreliable narrator. She is so distrusting of everyone around her. There are no signs of Conrad actually going to the fair to talk to the girl at the stand. Belly twists the truth during the Junior Mint flashback, making us feel bad for her. However, Conrad had seen Belly admiring the toy for days and wanted to win it for her. I’m sorry, but Belly is becoming unlikable.
Now, for the things I loved:
The music. I was a bit heartbroken when Delicate by Taylor Swift played for Jere and Belly, but the music this season was impeccable.
Steven and Taylor are so cute. I am 100% Team Staylor. The scene of them arguing in episode 8, but finally blurting out their feelings for each other was so cute, and the singing in the country club ballroom was so teenage. The best scene of them was Steven knowing Taylor’s middle name and winning the “fight” against Milo. (Getting even with Steven kinda hit though).
Laurel showed so much strength and growth throughout the season. She learned to accept and handle the grief of losing her best friend. She published a book and promoted it. I believe that Laurel was the only voice of reason this season. She showed up and stopped the sale of the summer house in less than 3 hours. Go Laurel.
Sassy Conrad was probably my favorite part of the season. Although he was petty, it was hilarious to watch and I think that it was used appropriately. Aunt Julia definitely deserved his sass. During the last episode, he had every right to be petty. I mean walking into the parking lot seeing your brother and current love kissing on your car in your college is tough. Connie baby deserves better.
If this season has taught me one thing, it’s that teenage girls are not to be messed with. Rather, they do the messing.
