Hello Readers! Welcome or welcome back to the 2023-2024 school year! Right now, you’re reading the school newspaper, The Eagle Eye. As most of you know, our school mascot is an eagle, so it makes perfect sense that our newspaper is synonymous. The school newspaper is contributed to by monthly and irregular writers that keep the school informed about school events, world events, holidays, the music and shows of the season, and much more.
Each month, lots of hard work is put into creating the edition. The editors, Jasmine (me), Pranav, Radha, , and Anjali decide on a theme for the month and brainstorm article ideas. Then, we hold a meeting with all writers to discuss said themes and ideas. Meeting recaps are posted on our Google Classroom and Messenger group chat in case you were not able to attend the meeting. Shortly after, deadlines are announced and posted. They are strict, and new writers quickly learn that it is best not to wait till 11:00 pm of the deadline to write a thousand-word article. Writers share their articles with the newspaper’s email, and the editing process begins. The editors will split up the articles and edit them within 2-3 days, making suggestions on your work. Then, writers will revise their articles by another 2-day deadline. Once this is completed, all the articles are compiled and sent to our principal, Mr. Mosaad, and our club advisor, Ms. DaSilva, so they can review the articles and approve them for publication. After the articles have been checked over one last time, the editors format the articles into the final edition that can be found on the Eagle Eye website, Facebook, the commons, and the bulletin board outside the Media Center. Our editors and writers put a lot of time, effort, and energy into perfecting the monthly paper.
Historically, our school clubs have been introduced to new (and returning) students at our Annual Club Fair. The commons, library, and hallways are lined up with tables and presentations managed by council members as students walk around. The Eagle Eye table is usually located in the media center and we have a display of old editions. This year, the club fair will be at the end of September, and we hope to see you there! To stay updated about school news and the paper, it is crucial that you join our Facebook group and Instagram. We post all of our announcements, including information about when club meetings are held, what we discussed in the meeting, and article assignments.
Meetings are usually held on the first Monday of the month, however, this can always change. We discuss the upcoming edition at the meetings, and writers can pick the articles they want to write. Writing for the newspaper is open to everyone. One of the newer aspects of the Eagle Eye is the idea of “columnists.” Our monthly writers, who contribute to our editions every month, are recognized for their dedication and work by being named columnists. Columnists are usually responsible for one section of the newspaper, varying from politics to technology. Some may research an issue and report its development each month and another may interview teachers and students about a current event at school. Columnists have grown over the past two years. Their writing progress has been visible and we hope that it continues this year.
There is a Google form that allows students to become columnists and choose what categories they would be comfortable writing about. This form is always open, so feel free to start writing at any time. If you would prefer to submit a story anonymously, you can let us know and we will make sure to accommodate you.
Because you are loyal readers of The Eagle Eye and members of our school community, we urge you to provide us with feedback and article ideas. This will allow us, the council members, to understand what our school likes to write and read about. If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to me or anyone else on the council, and we would be happy to answer them. We would love to have you join The Eagle Eye! To both new and returning members, we cannot wait to write with you this year!
